CREATE THE CHANGE YOU WANT IN YOUR LIFE
Helping to cope with Anxiety
ANXIETY: There are times when human beings will experience anxiety in their lives due to being in a dangerous or threatening situation. Then activation of our ‘fight/flight’ system works brilliantly to helps us survive.
However, when our brain becomes over sensitised to danger, we may experience more anxiety in our daily lives than is really necessary for our survival. This can occur due to a number of factors; the influence of others, our own temperament, negative or scary experiences and changes in our lives which may bring uncertainty about our future or our ability to cope.
We may experience anxiety in specific areas of our life; for example, social anxiety, health anxiety, or we may experience more generalised anxiety. With any type of anxiety, we may sometimes experience a very intense episode or panic attack. Sometimes these panic attacks can continue and worsen to become a panic disorder.
When we develop an anxiety disorder, it can impact negatively on the quality of our lives, and our relationships. Sleep and mood can all be affected. This can then impair our ability to function at our best and hinder our ability to achieve our goals in our working and personal lives. Suffering from anxiety may also be the catalyst for depressive episodes if not treated.
My therapeutic approach can inform you in everyday terms how your ‘fight/flight’ system works and together we explore the causes, triggers and factors which maintain feelings of anxiety. Then, using evidence-based strategies suited to each individual and situation, the therapy process involves learning practical techniques to achieve your therapy goals.
This is a step-by-step process supported while in therapy sessions. These new skills learned and insights gained can empower ones self to have more control, and be able to respond to even difficult situations more in accord with the ones values and desired outcomes.
