You do not need a referral; you may pay privately. You can use your private health psychology insurance without a referral. You will need to see your GP to get a referral and Mental Health Treatment plan to access a rebate from Medicare.
A psychologist is trained in the psychological (non-pharmaceutical) treatment and management of mental health disorders while a psychiatrist is a medical doctor trained in the treatment of mental health disorders, often using medication.
Indeed you should; there is no conflict here.You must never stop or change your medication without your doctor’s advice. Medication can assist your engagement with psychological therapy, ensuring you are able to gain the most benefit from your appointments. In time, as you recover and feel better, you can speak with your doctor who will advise you when it is appropriate to reduce your medication.

Payment is made at the time of your appointment. With a Mental Health Treatment plan the Medicare rebate can also be paid directly into your nominated bank account at the time of payment. If you have private health cover you will need to send the claim to your insurer yourself.
